“Time to Say Goodbye” had a curious beginning. It was first performed by Andrea Bocelli at the 1995 Sanremo Music Festival. In the following year the song served as music for the final boxing match of boxer Henry Maske. German producer Frank Peterson, who has worked with Sarah Brightman, decided to give the song an English title this time, rather than stick with the German title “Mit dir werde ich fortgehen”. The recording was created at Peterson’s Nemo Studio, in Hamburg, Germany. The match took place on November 23, 1996, with Maske opposing American boxer Virgil Hill. The broadcasted bout drew over 21 million viewers. Bocelli and Brightman performed the song to open the match, and then again during Maske’s exit. By December of that year, the “Time to Say Goodbye” single had reached #1 on the German singles chart. Within 3 months the single had broken the all-time sales record in Germany with 1.65 million sales, and would soon be certified 11x Gold for the sales of over 2,750,000 copies. “Time to Say Goodbye” reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. Soon after its release in the UK in May 1997 “Time to Say Goodbye”was certified Gold. Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman have performed “Time to Say Goodbye” as a duet several times, including performances in Bocelli’s “Statue of Liberty concert” in New York City, and his “Live in Tuscany” concerts.
