For as long as I can remember I’ve been teaching Colors of the Wind from Pocohantas to my piano students. So much popular music these day is missing elements that make a melody truly great. The range is often narrow and expressive character is missing completely. Not so with Colors of the Wind. This melody has it all. The introduction intrigues. The verse keeps you listening. And the chorus soars.
“Colors of the Wind” was written by music composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. It was composed for Walt Disney Pictures’ 33rd animated feature film, Pocahontas, released in 1995. The film’s most popular song, “Colors of the Wind,” was originally recorded by singer and actress Judy Kuhn, who provided the singing voice for Pocahontas. “Colors of the Wind” received a many positive accolades from critics, including citing the song as one of the best songs for a Disney film. It was honored with an Academy Award for Best Original Song, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture.

About Disney’s Pocohantas (The Movie)
Pocahontas was released in 1995, and is loosely based on the life of a Native American woman named Pocahontas. It also portrays a fictionalized account of her encounter with Englishman John Smith. It was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 33rd Disney animated feature film, and the 6th film produced and released during a period that has come to be known as the Disney Renaissance. Pocohantas was directed by Mike Gabriel and Eric Goldberg, and features the voice talent of Irene Bedard as Pocahontas and Mel Gibson as John Smith.
