Walls That Teach | Intentional Decisions for Music Education

Most teachers decorate their walls with all kinds of posters. In most music classrooms there always seems to be a featured composer. This is all great stuff!

I’d like to challenge you to push beyond what’s commonplace. Consider your goals for this year. What are your “main things.” What are the music concepts that you really want kids to learn in 2016-17? Put those things up now and let your walls support your efforts.

Note Name Worksheets and Flashcards
One of the first goals for beginning piano students should be learning note names. Without a knowledge of note names the music page will mean little to them, and it will be a challenge for teachers to get them to look at the music – a habit they should embrace early on. Below are several free printable worksheets and wonderful flashcards (paid products) to get your young music students off on the right foot.

Für Elise | Easy Piano Sheet Music (PDF)

Für Elise by Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the most popular pieces for piano solo ever written. The work was composed around 1810 when Beethoven was 40 years old, and already an established composer. It is believed to have been written for Therese Malfatti, a woman to whom Beethoven had proposed marriage. However, the printer misread the Beethoven’s poor handwriting, mistaking “Für Therese” for “Für Elise.”

About the Composer of Für Elise (Beethoven)

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770, to Johann van Beethoven and Maria Magdalena Keverich. Although Beethoven’s exact birth date is not known, his family celebrated it on December 16. Ludwig’s first musical instruction came from his father Johann who was said to have been a harsh instructor. Johann later asked his friend, Tobias Pfeiffer, to teach his son. It seems that the harsh treatment continued, as Johann and his friend would come home late on occasion to pull young Ludwig from his bed to practice until morning. Read more…
